Thirst Mod for Minecraft 1.7.10

Yay!  More ways to die in Minecraft!  …  Okay, in all seriousness, this mod is actually pretty great.  User duke_Frans has created the Thirst mod, which – as its name suggests – adds thirst to the game.  This mod makes the game a bit more realistic by requiring you to drink water as well as eat.

This mod functions quite simply.  Currently, the water meter is displayed in the center of the GUI as a droplet that fills and drains vertically:

This is reminiscent of adventure games like Diablo and many older Nintendo or Playstation titles.  It is a nice, charming touch.

The thirst meter will continue to deplete regardless of what the player is doing, draining faster with actions like mining or running – just like hunger.  To replenish thirst, simply consume some bottled water.  Regular bottles will only restore a small amount, but drinking purified water will restore the entire meter.

Purified water is a new item that can be crafted with a gold nugget on top, sugar cane in the middle, and a water bottle on the bottom.

This mod is slightly underdeveloped as it stands, but has great plans for the future.  Some aspects you can expect to see in coming patches are more drinkable items, storage pouches, thirst effects, and what I assume to be a special inventory slot for water.

My opinion of this mod: it is a fantastic idea and so far is executed smoothly.  Adding layers of involvement into the game beyond the typical blocks and items mod is extremely important for keeping players interested.  Thirst is actually something I have always wished Minecraft had.  I like where it is going with purified water as well, and hope to see support for many other beverages – milk in particular, but possibly things like soda, energy drinks, and apple juice.

How to install the Thirst Mod for Minecraft 1.7.10

  1. Download and install Minecraft Forge mod loader

  2. Download the latest version of the Thirst Mod.

  3. Hold Windows key and press R to open the Run… dialog, or go to Start > Run.

  4. Enter %appdata% and navigate to your .minecraft/mods folder.

  5. Drag and drop the .zip file downloaded in step 2 into this folder.

Based on the four expected features listed above, what would you like to see added to this mod?  I personally think having a dedicated button for the dedicated drink slot would be great – i.e. simply pressing C to drink a purified water bottle.  I also think higher capacity bottles would be nice (more than one drink).  Leave your ideas in the comments below!
