Minecraft’s mobs can get boring after a while. They are generic for the most part and typically not very challenging to fight. HoopAWolf and UKdeccy of PlanetMinecraft change this with the Myths & Monsters mod, adding in a wide range of lesser-known mythological creatures and a ton of new items to go with them!
Since this mod is so large, I will not be covering all of it – instead I will select the most interesting monsters and items, broken up into two sections.
There are currently 17 monsters added with this mod, one of which is incomplete. An image of several mobs, as provided by the developers, is shown below.
The kitsune is a trickster by nature. In legend, this fox feeds off of the life or spiritual energy of others, usually appearing as a young attractive girl to lull people into a false sense of security. Kitsunes are sometimes depicted as males as well, however. In this mod, the kitsune will spawn a fake clone of itself when it is low on health.
This mob is pictured in the image below.
One of the most important mobs in this mod, the Dendroid is a tree creature that populates the forests of Minecraft. They drop Dendroid Roots when defeated and shoot sticks as their primary attack. Axes and fire are especially effective against Dendroids. This mob also has three higher level versions: the Dendroid Sentinel and the Dendroid Seer, which are equal in power, and the Dendroid Elder which is a very large boss mob.
Dendroid, Dendroid Elder, and Dendroid Sentinel are pictured in the image below.
The Void Ursa is a fearsome night-dwelling creature (possibly a reference to the Ursa Major constellation) that lives only in snowy biomes. It is hostile and can blind the player during combat. This mob has a counterpart, the Celestial Ursa, which acts as a companion when found (although it will not follow the player). These two mobs will attempt to defeat each other on sight. Both drop Star Cores, which must be mined.
A desert-dwelling, large scaled worm creature with tusks. This mob is similar to the sand wyrms found in popular science fiction, such as Tremors. They will dive into the sand to avoid damage and pop up elsewhere for a surprise attack, using similar tactics as Enderman’s. They attack in groups and drop their scales and tusks when slain.
Other mobs include:
Hill / Clay Giant
The list of items is also quite extensive. Here are my top five favorite items from this mod:
Dendroid Sword – a versatile melee and ranged weapon. Fires sticks when right-clicked, similar to a Dendroid. Infinite ammunition. Holding this weapon also yields a regeneration buff when the player falls below 3 full hearts. When used in melee it is slightly more powerful than an unenchanted diamond sword.
Bone Dagger – applies the Wither debuff to enemies when striking. Being closer amplifies the debuff, so striking a mob while standing right next to it causes a devastating wither.
Golden Lyre – an awesome utility weapon that fires musical notes as projectiles. Enemies struck by these notes fall asleep.
Kitsune Tail – dropped from slaying the real kitsune (not its clone). This tail yields a random amount of experience points when consumed.
Dendroid Mask – when worn, consuming bad apples (another new item) yields great bonuses instead of negative effects.
As you can see, much of this mod revolves around the Dendroid mobs so far. There are several other Dendroid items. For a huge graphical list of crafting recipes, click here.
This mod is constantly growing as new myths are researched by the team. It is definitely a great mod to keep up-to-date on, as the creators seem to have a great handle on coming up with interesting ideas. From their mod page it also seems that mythical areas are planned as well – perhaps biomes or generated structures.
