Some of the most masterfully crafted skins are the results of skin battles on Minecraft forums. This skin of the Pokemon Machoke was created by Drazile12 as part of the Official Ultra HardCore Skin Battle League.
It should come as no surprise that I am once again featuring a skin by this user – most skins that Drazile posts are of superior quality. This one is no exception. Any Pokemon fan can immediately attest to the accuracy of this skin.
The challenge for the skin battle that produced this skin was to create a video game based skin with “simple shading”. Drazile’s use of each pixel is precise and thought through well; the amount of detail achieved with such a limited color palette is no small feat.
My only negative comment for this skin is that the shading on the outside of the legs seems perhaps too dark in relation to the rest of the skin; no other edges are this drastically shaded.
Installing the Skin
For online play, skins can be installed by simply uploading the file to your profile on Minecraft.net. Skins posted on certain websites can be uploaded directly from their page, including this one; click on the button on the right-hand side labeled “change my skin” to be taken directly to the appropriate page.
For offline play only, the process is similar to installing mods:
Download the skin’s .png file;
Hold Windows key and press R to bring up the Run… dialog, or go to Start > Run.
Type %appdata% and press enter, then navigate to roaming/.minecraft/versions.
Open the folder containing the version you use for offline play and view the .jar file using WinRAR.
Create a backup of the meta.inf file contained inside the .jar and store it in a separate folder.
Navigate within the .jar file to assets/minecraft/textures/entity.
Rename the image file titled “steve” to anything else (such as steve_backup).
Change the name of your skin’s .png file to steve.png and insert it here.
Always keep any files that will be affected by a skin or mod backed up, just in case anything goes wrong.
