Boats in vanilla Minecraft are far from perfect. They break at seemingly completely random points and are overall not very versatile. NightKosh’s mod Lavaboat adds two new boats – one that can traverse lava, and one that improves on the default boat.
The first boat is simply called a reinforced boat. It is upgraded from the original boat by padding it with iron, increasing its durability:
When crashing into anything – even solid blocks – these boats will not be destroyed. This is a vast improvement upon the basic boat which has a tendency to shatter from coming into contact with a lily pad!
The second boat is the lava boat, which the mod is named after. This boat is constructed by crafting a reinforced boat with obsidian in the same fashion to give it even more protection:
On top of the benefits of the reinforced boat, this item allows players to travel safely through lakes of lava. This is an invaluable tool for traversing the Nether or exploring deep caverns in search of diamonds.
Both of these boats also move slightly faster than the original boat, and the lava boat leaves behind a spray of ash and lava particles (a purely aesthetic addition).
NightKosh plans to incorporate two more boats in the future, including a larger boat that allows some animals to be transported and a cargo boat that acts like the chest minecart. It was last updated in January, so hopefully with some motivation from fans this will become a reality!

Drag and drop the .jar file downloaded in step 2 into this folder.
Aside from the four boats mentioned in this post, what other types of boats would you like to see? I personally think war boats would be awesome – huge seafaring vessels made to fend off sea creatures or other ships. Leave your ideas in the comments!
