Cinyphis, the Hideous Skin

The Underground Creatures Skin Contest, held in April, spawned a wide array of interesting and horrifying sub-human skins.  I am a huge lover of all things horror in entertainment, so I tend to be harshly critical.  This skin, Cinyphis the Hideous by Joss-a-Skinz, stands out from the crowd of monstrosities.

Cinyphis’s story is actually pretty elaborate and gripping.  It would seem that Joss-a-Skinz is not only an excellent artist and character designer, but also a talented writer.  I will not post it here, but feel free to visit the skin’s page and read it yourself.

With that out of the way, I’d like to highlight how awesome this creature’s head is.  Sure, the shading and texture is incredible on the rest of the model, but the head stands out for a few reasons.

  1. The eyes.  I cannot stand when every single skin, whether it’s a monster or a human, uses one of two formats for eyes.  The theme of this skin lends well to having unique eyes, but regardless they are a strong point for it.  On top of this, their three-dimensionality is phenomenal.

  2. Wrap-around.  Again, almost every other skin suffers from poor management of the planes of the model’s face.  Skinners make all details stop at the end of the plane rather than make some kind of appearance on the side of the head.  This skin does it perfectly.

  3. The teeth.  They look goofy upon first glance, but their exaggerated nature absolutely fits with the size of the eyes and the game in general.

If I had to complain about anything in this skin, it would be the wings.  They are done well, don’t get me wrong – but I just dislike the fact that they have to be attached to the legs.  I guess that is more of a complaint for Mojang than Joss-a-Skinz, though!

Installing the Skin

For online play, skins can be installed by simply uploading the file to your profile on Minecraft.net.  Skins posted on certain websites can be uploaded directly from their page, including this one; click on the button on the right-hand side labeled “change my skin” to be taken directly to the appropriate page.

For offline play only, the process is similar to installing mods:

  1. Download the skin’s .png file;

  2. Hold Windows key and press R to bring up the Run… dialog, or go to Start > Run.

  3. Type %appdata% and press enter, then navigate to roaming/.minecraft/versions.

  4. Open the folder containing the version you use for offline play and view the .jar file using WinRAR.

  5. Create a backup of the meta.inf file contained inside the .jar and store it in a separate folder.

  6. Navigate within the .jar file to assets/minecraft/textures/entity.

  7. Rename the image file titled “steve” to anything else (such as steve_backup).

  8. Change the name of your skin’s .png file to steve.png and insert it here.
