Chameleon Blocks Mod for Minecraft 1.6.4/1.7.2/1.7.4/1.7.5

The structure of Minecraft allows for an enormous amount of creativity.  TeNNoX of PlanetMinecraft is an established modder who recently designed a simple yet genius addition to the game we all love: Chameleon Blocks.

Only a single block is added with this mod.  It is crafted with a redstone block, yellow dye, and red dye:

Crafting recipe for a Chameleon Block

As the name suggests, the block takes on the texture of any block it is placed adjacent to.  Surrounding Chameleon Blocks will also change texture.  They return to their default texture when the original block is destroyed.  As an example:

  1. Place a block of diamond.

  2. Place a Chameleon Block next to it – it immediately looks like a block of diamond.

  3. Place a Chameleon Block next to the previous Chameleon Block – it also looks like a block of diamond.

  4. Destroy the original block of diamond.  Both Chameleon Blocks take on their native texture (as shown in the crafting picture).

  5. Place a grass block.  Both Chameleon Blocks turn into grass blocks.

Before you ask – no, Chameleon Blocks do not take on the properties of the original block.  Mining it simply destroys the block.  To see the mod in action, check out this video by TeNNoX:

While this may be fun to play with, you might question its usefulness at first glance.  It is greatly versatile and new functions are bound to be discovered as it gains popularity.  To name a few uses it currently has:

  • Cheap structures – let’s say you are playing in survival mode and want to make an arch out of the aforementioned blocks of diamonds.  All you need is one and a few healthy stacks of Chameleon Blocks!

  • Customizable buildings – not sure what you want your house to look like?  Build it out of Chameleon Blocks and you can change it in an instant to compare looks.  Just swap out the real block and take a look.

  • Redstone magic – change the environment as players move around using pressure plates and sticky pistons.

Many more possibilities await!
