If you’ve found Minecraft’s default cave systems to be too small and boring, then you’ll love the Cave-Gen Mod. This mod – which is technically called Cave-Gen Mod 2.0 because its original creator abandoned it – completely changes the way Minecraft caves work.
Forget everything you knew about Minecraft caves. Caves are no longer just a minor part of a larger world type. Instead, the Cave-Gen Mod creates a whole new world type called ‘Caves’. This new world type is a bit more challenging than traditional world types. Resources in the caves are limited and there are plenty of monsters waiting in the depths.
The Cave world type includes three different biomes, although the mod refers to them as zones. Here are the three types of zones that players can explore:
Rock zone: This zone will look the most familiar to traditional Minecraft players. Caves are much more expansive than traditional Minecraft caves, although they feature similar layouts, columns, and other designs. Large stalactites and stalagmites punctuate the depths of Rock zone caves and there are plenty of sheds and ancient ruins to be found.
Snow zone: The Snow zone is probably the most depressing zone in this mod. The mod creator himself calls it a “frozen hell.” All ores are buried deep within the snow and players will only find monsters in the surrounding tunnels and caverns – nothing else lives here. Icicles hang from the ceiling to complete the chilling effect created by this mod.
Jungle zone: The Jungle zone is located under a massive jungle, which means players will encounter roots penetrating the darkest depths of this zone. The zone features no ores whatsoever, although there are sometimes remote, abandoned shacks. All of the stone is covered in moss and the effect is truly creepy. Players will depend on the roots of trees in order to harvest the wood they need.
Every zone has dungeons that players can explore to destroy zombie, skeleton, spider, and creeper spawners. Some dungeons are small, and feature just a single cobblestone brick room no more than five or six blocks wide. Other dungeons are large, and populated by a number of dangerous enemies.
There are also random sheds, bridges, and the ruins of complete villages scattered underground. And for those wary adventurers who want to travel to the surface world, don’t bother: it’s nothing but a desolate wasteland with branchless trees and clouds of gas.
If you like Minecraft caves so much that you want to explore a world filled with them, then the Cave-Gen Mod can be a lot of fun. Download it today to start building in a world that few people have ever explored.
