Let’s take a minute to talk about slimes. Up until 1.8, all they were used for was making leads and getting easy experience points. They were pretty rare in most worlds, so they were actually pretty important – leads are almost necessary for making a successful livestock farm. User Heneray of PlanetMinecraft has created the Better Slime mod, which allows slimeballs to be used for more than just making leads and trampolines.
So far, this mod is primarily used to make tools and armor out of slime. They are as powerful as diamonds, making them quite useful, and come with a bonus effect. All recipes are the same as they would be for any normal material (wood, iron, etc.).
Aside from looking like a radioactive slime monster, slime armor provides the benefit of increased jump height. This boost is quite significant.
There is also a slime ore which when destroyed with a pickaxe will yield slime balls. It is quite rare, however.
Finally, there is a creative only item called the Anti Grav Device – this reverses the gravity for all creepers, making them fly helplessly up into the air. Or of course, putting them on your ceiling, which makes them even creepier…
Some other items are planned for the mod’s future: throwing slimeballs, slime bows, extra weapons, and more.
My opinion of this mod: a decent start to fleshing out one of Minecraft’s lesser appreciated items and mobs. I would love to see this mod take off and make slimes a truly useful feature – not just an annoyance that makes squishing noises near your town.
How to install the Better Slime Mod for Minecraft 1.7.10
Download and install Minecraft Forge mod loader
Download the latest version of Better Slime.
Hold Windows key and press R to open the Run… dialog, or go to Start > Run.
Enter %appdata% and navigate to your .minecraft/mods folder.
Drag and drop the .zip file downloaded in step 2 into this folder.
What other slime-oriented items would you like to see? I would personally love to see liquid slime, a pourable item in a bucket – could slow down movement considerably more than water, and drown players/mobs much faster if submerged. Just a thought! Leave your ideas in the comments.
